Marge Cooney left Phil Donahue after 17 years of marriage in 1975. The divorce agreement granted her custody of the daughter and Phil custody of the four boys.

Marge Cooney returned to New Mexico, remarried, and vanished from public view. She died on February 2, 2018, at Brandywine Wall.
