Kelli Schroeder, her mother, was first hesitant but after thinking of college expenses, she allowed her daughter to get into acting.

She then got a job as a child print model and soon began doing print work in Chicago for Sears, Roebuck and Company, Kmart, Spiegel, Lands’ End, Chuck E. Cheese’s and many other print advertisers. In 1995, she was asked by Bob Ebel, a child director, to do several TV commercials.

In 1997, she got hired by ABC to play Serena Baldwin on Port Charles. For her role, she got nominated for a Young Artist Award on the show twice, in 1999 and in 2000 and a Young Star Award nomination for Best Performance by a Young Actress in a Daytime TV Program in 1999.

She auditioned for her first feature film role in 2003 and won the role of Millie in the thriller Mean Creek. It led to wide acclaim for Schroeder while the rest of the cast won the Humanitas Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, and was awarded the 2005 Independent Spirit Festival Special Distinction Award for best ensemble cast.

In 2006, she got her next film role in Gracie for which she began an intense three-month work-out to land the role. The work-out included a daily regimen of not only physical fitness, but also of training in advanced soccer skills with professional athletes and trainers.
